Team Columbus were first up when presenting the space port proposals. The President, VP and Directors presented their case followed by the whole team answering questions.

Well done Brambletye and thank you Bede's

Good start to Bede's Galactic Challenge

Good start to Bede's Galactic Challenge

Bede's welcomed us with bacon butties and drinks
before an introductory talk and then the three companies got down to business. The Brambletye team are working with students from Marlborough House in Columbus Aviation.
First they had to vote for a company president, Vice President for Marketingand three directors to take charge of different areas of the design brief. They divided these roles between the two schools.
Then a quick pep talk from the CEO, a sixth form pupil from the Bede's member of the U.K. Space design competition team, the directors get their teams designing.
The teams are working really well together.
The president calls s meeting with her directors
And relays progress to the marketing team
All is very busy here at Bede's

6S get microscopic?

6S have started using microscopes this term.
After examining the print on photographs
they are now using microscopic rulers to measure the field of view
on all of the different microscopes
this will give them an idea how big the samples are that they look at.
Those that finished quickly used the iBook to learn more about cells.
If you want to download the iBook at home use this link:
First "download" then "open in ibooks" but it will only work on
apple devices with ibooks (a free app) installed.

Forensic time for 7C

Extracting DNA from an onion is not too tricky an experiment and 7N pupils worked in pairs to do this today.
They recorded their activity by taking photos using the iPads
Grinding onion in salt water and filtering the suspension was the first task.
They needed to capture every part of the process

So they can make a cartoon strip of the experiment afterwards.
The last stage required careful pouring.

Precision work

Results were compared

The DNA is the thin white layer in the middle

Year 7 are on fire!

One Year 7 Science class have finished their work for the term and spent our last lesson looking at hydrocarbons. We first revisited the conditions required for combustion and then looked into hydrocarbons. Our first experiment involved testing our prediction that water and carbon dioxide would be produced when a hydrocarbon combusts.

Then we did one of our favourite experiments - the methane mamba! We are able to capture the methane in bubbles which we can set alight in the palm of our hands.

They represented all they had learnt in the form of a poster.

Last expt of term

Year 7 calculated the density of oxygen in the lab today.
