Y8 energy circus

In their last double lesson Y8 looked at energy changes in the following activities

Catapult firing Elastic PE to Kinetic E

Match lighting Chemical PE to Thermal and Light

Electric motor turning Chemical PE > Electrical > Kinetic

Nails in an old coke tin Kinetic to Sound

More motors

And a solar cell Light to Electrical

All results recorded carefully

A most energetic lesson.

5D test food

In today's double Science lesson 5D got their lab coats on and test food for starch and glucose.

Testing for starch with iodine

Recording results

Observing any colour change

Lots of foods to test

All hard at work.

Results carefully recorded

Using Benedictus solution to test for glucose

One enterprising pupil wanted to test an acorn for starch and so we broke it open and tested the parts

With interesting results.

Y8 check out energy transfers

We have been looking at energy changes in a variety of actions in our lesson today.

In a light bulb

A photoelectric cell

An electric motor

Recording results

Striking a match

A catapult

With results recorded we can now think about measuring energy.

7A test the elements

7A examined the physical characteristics of a selection of elements.

Testing to see if they conduct electricity

And magnetic

And even using this property to perform magic tricks

Checking out the appearance

We will be examining compounds next.

7A get their white coats on

The first double Science lesson of the term and 7A did an experiment.

They heated the elements iron and sulphur.

These were mixed together in a boiling tube.

The metal could be separated from the sulphur with a magnet before heating.

But when heated a glow passed along the mixture as s reaction occurred.

The new substance, iron sulphide, looked different and wasn't magnetic.

The two elements made a compound.

Welcome back

Testing a new blogging app to see if we can get the Bramblesci blog back up and running

Owl photo test.
