Year 6 visit the seed bank

Year Six are doing projects on the life cycle of a flowering plant this term. To learn more about this topic we visited the Millennium seed bank at Wakehurst Place.

We started off in the seed bank where we learnt about the work they carry out.

We saw the scientists at work cleaning the seed samples that they had received.

We looked at lots of different types of seeds.

This included the smallest seed, from an orchid, and the largest seed, from the double coconut.

Then we went for a walk through the botanical gardens. On our walk we learnt all about the different parts of a flower and their functions.

We even witnessed some insect pollination!

We finished our morning by discussing the importance of plants and what life would be like without plants. We removed items from the board that we couldn't have if there were no plants. At the end the board was empty.

What energy changes here?

I visited a small factory in Norfolk where they make DBR Le Mans cars. This is a quite a car as you can see from the photo below.
While I was whiizzing along the road on a test drive the car was burning petrol, a hydrocarbon. Here are a couple of questions for you.
What are the energy changes happening while I was driving along?
What are the products from the combustion of the petrol?
As usual prizes for the correct answers.

Another famous tree

I have moved on from Isaac Newton's home (well done Harry and Emily for working out the correct answer).
Here is a tree in Norfolk that is in the estate that was owned by the uncle of a figure famous in British history. As a young lad he climbed this tree when he visited his mother's brother at Woodton Park.
The tree is very old, more than 250 years old.
Who was this famous boy and what was his finest hour. Prize for the first correct answers.
