Year Six are doing projects on the life cycle of a flowering plant this term. To learn more about this topic we visited the Millennium seed bank at Wakehurst Place.
We started off in the seed bank where we learnt about the work they carry out.
We saw the scientists at work cleaning the seed samples that they had received.
We looked at lots of different types of seeds.
This included the smallest seed, from an orchid, and the largest seed, from the double coconut.
Then we went for a walk through the botanical gardens. On our walk we learnt all about the different parts of a flower and their functions.
We even witnessed some insect pollination!
We finished our morning by discussing the importance of plants and what life would be like without plants. We removed items from the board that we couldn't have if there were no plants. At the end the board was empty.
