6S and their Beaky adaptations

6S have been doing a little work on adaptations and wondered why birds have different beaks. They did an activity today that will help them to understand. They used different types of "beaks" to pick up all sorts of "food". The beaks were tongs, bulldog clips, clothes pegs and tweezers while the food consisted of such delights as marbles, string, rubber bands, pasta, ping pong balls, rice and zinc granules. They had 30 seconds with each beak and had to try to get a sample of each food in their petri dish using only the "beak". Working against the clock doesn't always result in good photographs. Who said learning couldn't be fun?
